Interval workout at the gym.  Mixture of 2 miles on the treadmill with an additional outside.  The outside workout consisted of 3 out-and-backs with an increase of speed at the end of each interval.  The outside portion also included a hill with a 6% incline.  This was my first running workout since the move to Georgia.

6.2 mile run outside.  This was not easy.  This was my first real run outside with the hills.  It was hard and it rained for most of it.  I was very happy to get through it.  There were at least two or three good hills on this run.

This was my first long run since the move.  It rained again.  The course that I ran was mostly through neighborhoods with hills.  It was a hard as I am still getting used to the hills.  The part of Florida that I lived in did not really have any hills.  I walked every now and then to catch my breath.  I completed this run in 1:47:19.

I actually walked 3 miles with my dogs and a friend of my husbands prior to this run.  I did not think that I would make it through all 6 miles, but I was pleasantly surprised.  For the first time, I added two hills at the beginning from the neighborhood behind ours.  They are hard, but it gets a good mile under my belt before I hit my familiar route.

Tread and Shed class at the gym.  First 2.1 miles were on the treadmill.  I was able to get up to a 7:57 min/ mile when at top speed.  We took it outside for 1.4 miles with two laps that included a couple of hills, and ending each lap with a sprint.  We finished the workout with a couple of sprints.

My husband and I then went on a 5-6 mile hike.  According to the brochure for the park, we were supposed to see deer swim, but that didn't quite happen.

I decided to run four miles today after walking 3 miles with my two dogs and a friend of mine that was in from out of town.  In the past, I have just done the walking part, but decided to add the four miles as a way of slowly adding additional running days and mileage.  My run incorporated the first three miles of my normal 6 mile route, with the last mile essentially running home.  It felt good to be out there and it gave me a chance to try out some new running gear.

The course was a bit harder than I thought it would be.  The last part of the race (just prior to the finish) was a steep hill.  I have been training on hills since I moved here, which helped, but I was still breathing a bit harder than I would have liked to when I got to the top.  I always try to finish strong, but was not able to move as quickly as I would have liked to.  The course was fairly shady, which was nice.  I set a PR, so needless to say, I was quite happy when I was done.

Since I am trying to build up my mileage, I kept this one pretty casual.  I ran on the treadmill, warming up for a minute or two just over a 10:00 min/ mile pace, then settled in at  10:00 min/ mile pace for a couple of miles eventually moving up to a 9:30 min/ mile pace by the last mile.  After my run, I joined the Group Power class as the gym, which is weightlifting utilizing a barbell as well as free weights.

I was a little nervous getting to the race, because the town is so small that I couldn't get directions for it.  Fortunately, I was told that it was prior to another town and was able to get there without any problems.  The race went off without any problems.  The roads were marked and volunteers were out there to guide you in the right direction.  My original goal was to complete this in about 42:30, but that was prior to running on the rolling hills that I encountered during miles 3 and 4.    When all was said and done, I was happy with how I did and enjoyed myself.  This was a small race, so it wasn't too surprising that there was only one other person in my age group.  I was still happy to be first though.

I completed 8 miles on the treadmill.  I warmed up with a pace just over a 10 min. mile and then worked up to a 10 min/ mile pace for a couple of miles, then to a 9:50 min/ mile pace.  At around mile 5, I took it up to a 9:40 min/ mile pace and completed the last mile at a 9:30 min/ mile pace.  Sportscenter and my Ipod kept me company for the duration.  Sometimes, running on the treadmill for this distance can feel painfully long, but this time it was alright.

I took this run to the streets.  It was a humid morning, but I fared alright.  I am still in the process of increasing my base.  My weekday runs are starting to feel similar to my long runs.  I have noticed for the last week or so that I have slowed down a bit.  I was at 1:22:36 when I hit 8 mile mark this morning.  I am always aiming to maintain at least the 10 min./ mile pace.  I am not sure if the decrease in pace is due to the increase in mileage.  I am not sure what else it could be.  My life hasn't changed much in the last few weeks.  I am still looking for work on a daily basis and stressing a bit over that.  I am fairly well rested.  I have been studying the last 2-3 weeks, but that has only been about an hour a day and my exam is this Saturday, so that will soon cease.  I guess I just need to give my body time to adjust.

The weight that I have listed is post-run.

I had to walk all but the first quarter mile of this workout.  Sometime yesterday afternoon, I noticed a pain by my hip area.  It feels as though it stiffens when I sit down.  When I get up, it takes a few steps for the uncomfortableness to dissipate.  I tried to run first, hoping that it would go away after a few minutes, but unfortunately it did not.  My average pace was a 15:22 min/ mile.  I tried a 15:00 min/ mile, but I would still notice the feeling.  It is not terrible by any stretch of the imagination.  I am not sure if it is maybe my hip flexor.  I am going to see what I can find online and on the discussion forum.

I was really happy to get through this run today since my hip was hurting me yesterday.  I had already told myself that I would walk if I had too.  I still noticed discomfort in that area, especially during the last mile, but overall it wasn't bad at all.  I was able to make up one of the two miles that I missed yesterday, since I added a couple of streets that I had not run on before.  One of the streets, of course, was a nice hill.  I was able to complete this run in 1:31:16.

I listed this under easy, but there was nothing easy about it.  I wasn't able to start this run until noon, since I had a job interview.  It must have been in the mid-80's out there.  Fortunately, I did get some cloud cover, but it was brutal.  My minimum goal was 8 1/2 miles, so that I was at least at 40 for the week.  I have an exam that I am taking tomorrow morning, so my goal was to get this long run in today and then give myself and my hip a couple of days to rest.  I felt the uncomfortableness in the hip area throughout my run, although the degree of pain varied to being very mild to, oh yeah, it's there.  I have also started putting some icyhot patches on it as well.

I was at 113.5 post run.

I ran this one at the gym on the treadmill.  I was a little worried at first, because I felt that pain on my hip right away.  After a minute, I got off and ran a few steps in the gym to see if that would feel any better, which it did.  I decided to try the treadmill again and just ease myself into my ten minute per mile pace.  That seemed to be effective as I was able to get through the rest of my run without any problems (I did have to stop after 3 miles to use the restroom, but this tends to be common when I am at the gym.).  I was able to finish the last mile at a 9:30 min./ mile pace.

When I started this run, my goal was to run 8 miles.  Due to an unplanned restroom stop, I wound up completing 9 miles.  This was not a bad thing.  I was running my normal route and realized that I needed to answer mother nature's call.  I was a good 1/2 mile or so from the closest place that I could stop at, so needless to say, I turned around and answered the call.  This of course, added at least an extra mile that I wasn't expecting.  I then decided to go down a road that I didn't do initially, which added more distance.  Eventually, I got back to where I had originally turned around, realized that I could eliminate a couple of turns that I would normally make and still made it back home with the extra mile under my belt.  I completed the 9 miles in about 1:31:11.  I felt pretty good.  I have realized that I am making a slight adjustment at the start to make sure that I am not feeling that pain near my hip area.  I am starting off a bit slower to ease myself in to my pace, which seems to be helping.

My post-run weight was 114 lbs.

I am concerned about one issue that I am having with my right leg.  It seems to feel weak as I run faster.  This has been going on for quite a while, but I have noticed it more over the last month or two.  I just feels as though my leg is going to give out.  As soon as I slow down, as in not moving fast at all, the leg feels fine.

So then I looked at your profile and saw some other similarities. Our race times are similar, and we're both teachers. And we both have weird pains! Just wanted to say hi and wish you happy running!

This was the first time in a while that I had to get my run in within a certain time limit.  I had an exam at 9:00am and wanted to get my run in prior.  It was nice to "only" go 6.5 miles today.  I had an hour and five minutes to run and got exactly 6.5 miles during that period, which equates to an average pace of 10 min./ mile.  This run also gave me the opportunity to see how well lit the neighborhood near my house is early in the morning.  Unfortunately, it is not well lit at all. Now that I am aware of this, I will have to be strategic in planning my runs once I am employed again.  Hopefully, this will be sooner vs. later.

Regarding your question, I've been training according to the advice of Sasha of this site--6 days a week working up to 10 miles each time. I thought I would get to that point and then start doing longer runs, but I'm running out of time. I think I will skip Long Beach (or maybe do the half just for fun) and keep training smartly and try a Boston Qualifying race in December. I'm currently looking at Santa Barbara because it's the only one near me then, but it's a little hillier than I would like. Long Beach is nice and flat, so I hate that I'll miss that opportunity. What are your plans for a next race?

I do have one concern.  I felt nauseated for the majority of the run.  I do tend to have nerves prior to racing, but this was not a bathroom issue.  I do know that I have seen plenty of runners vomit towards the end of races that they have run very hard.  I didn't enjoy the race very much because of this feeling.  I hope that this isn't typical for me.  This will probably be my last race at this distance for a while, because my marathon training started a couple of weeks ago.

Congratulations on a PR!

Feeling nauseous in a 5 K is normal. Lasse Viren threw up after winning the Olympics. I consider it an accomplishment if I feel nauseous at the end of a 5 K. It means I gave it all, left nothing on the road.

We have a choice when we race. We can either enjoy the few minutes (or a couple of hours for the longer ones) of the actual race and then wonder for months if we could have done better, or we can give it all, experience some pain for the duration of the race, but then enjoy the accomplishment for much longer. Eventually you begin to even enjoy the right kind of pain because you appreciate it as a sign that you are on your way to an accomplishment.

The fact that you opened with 7:30 mile and the felt nauseous is very encouraging. What it means to me is that you have the speed to race the entire 5 K at 7:30 pace, but the aerobic support is not there yet. But with consistent training it will come.

Great job on the 5K! I was just going to say I like what the last guy told you in his comments, and then I noticed it was Sasha. Wow! I like the way he described our two choices. :)

Saw you've been sick. Feel better soon.

I had to skip working out yesterday and limit today's workout to 5 miles due to illness.  Saturday evening, while hanging out with friends, I developed a fever.  I am not sure as to how high it was, but both my husband and I agreed that I was burning up.  On that note, I was in bed by 9:00pm, took two Tylenol-8 hour pills and slept for the most part of the next 12 hours.  I rested all day Sunday, which is a non-running day for me anyway.  Monday, I decided that fresh air would probably be a good idea, so I put leashes on my dogs and took them for a slow two-mile walk.  I am feeling a bit better each day, although I do not feel 100% yet.  I was able to run most of the 5 miles today, but did walk a little bit during the last couple of miles.  I just felt tired and a little short of breath.

My original plan for the week was to get to 55 miles, but that goal is going to have to be re-adjusted.  My goal will be to run at least 8 miles each day for the next 3 days.  If I can do it, great, if not, I will just do what I can.  I still plan on getting 15 in on Saturday.

This was another slow one.  I decided to run outside today instead of going to the gym.  I just felt like I could use the fresh air and I wanted to be able to move at my own pace.  I felt a bit better today than I did yesterday, although I did feel a bit lightheaded in the beginning.  I was tired during the last mile to mile and a half.  I am sure that this is a combination of fatigue (from being sick) and the fact that I haven't been eating as much the past few days.  I also allowed myself to walk when the running felt a bit too much.  This usually happened going uphill.  Overall, I was happy to be out there and feel as though I should be back to my normal mileage in the next day or two.

 Post run weight was 112.5.

I am finally getting back into the swing of things.  I was able to get back up to 8 miles today without much walking.  I did have a couple of coughing fits, one as I completing mile 4 and the other was near mile 7, which slowed me down a little bit.  I completed the distance in 1:23:54, which is nothing to write home about, but it was definitely better than the past couple of days. The weather outside was good, 60's and overcast.  I felt a bit lightheaded prior to starting, but everything worked out alright.

These miles were completed on the treadmill.  My time was limited this morning since I was substitute teaching.  I was hoping for 8, but was only able to manage 7.  I had to go to the bathroom twice and I ran the first part slower than normal.  I just felt as though I should start off slowly.  It took a while to get in the groove.

This was the first time that I had run at least 15 miles since last year's Jacksonville Marathon.  It went fairly well.  The air was nice and cool at the stIart, although it did warm up by the time I was done (it was past 10:00am when I finished).  I was a little concerned about my stomach to start, but everything went fine.  I ran my normal route for the first 8 1/2 miles, and then decided to repeat a small part of it again (about 2 1/2 miles) so that the last few miles in the other direction wouldn't seem so long.  I finished in 2:37:41.  My average pace was a 10:30 min/ mile.  I felt pretty good for the most of the run.  I definitely started feeling a bit tired during the last couple of miles.

I ran this one at the gym.  I wasn't sure if I was going to have to work today, so I thought better be safe than sorry and get my workout in.  I am glad that I did, because I wound up picking up a sub job this morning.  My run went well.  I tuned into Sportscenter for the entire run, which helped pass the time.  Unfortunately, running on the treadmill is not exciting.  The first mile was pretty much a warm up.  I actually felt some knee pain after the first couple of minutes, so I slowed it down, readjusted, and then worked my way back up.  I ran the final 7 miles at a 10:00 min/ mile pace.

For the first time in a while, I ran these miles in the afternoon.  I am trying to figure out my training schedule for when I eventually go back to work.  One idea is to run a couple of days a week after work so that I don't have to get up at 4:00am.  Since I substitute teaching job today, I figured that I would try it out.  It wasn't bad.  I just had to make sure that I changed and was ready to go as soon as I got home.  I was able to do that for the most part.  It was a bit warm outside, as the afternoons here are still in the 80's.  I was able to complete my run in 1:20:21, which is a bit faster than what I have done in a while.   Overall, I feel pretty good.

I decided to run this afternoon as I am trying to get used to a new schedule in the hopes that I will get hired soon.  I did substitute teach today, therefore I wasn't able to start until after 4:00pm.  It was raining when I got home, but it stopped so I thought I would run outside (I was debating about going to the gym because of the weather).  After the 1st mile, the rain came back and continued for the next 5 miles.  It was a nice steady rain for those miles.  The rain finally tapered off during the last two miles.  I was able to complete the mileage in approximately 1:21.  Both my time and distance are approximate since I lost the signal on my GPS for a good 4-5 minutes during the first mile.  When I got the signal back, it was off by a good .2-.25 miles.

It was another rainy run this morning.  For the first 8 miles, it was misting outside.  It actually felt kind of nice.  Due to the inclement weather, I left the iPod at home.  During the last 8 miles it rained the entire time.  It was a good steady rain for the most part.  Every now and then it would rain a bit harder.  I was able to complete this run in 2:43:03.  Unfortunately, I am not sure how accurate the distance was due to the weather.  I utilized my Garmin, but the signal became weak many times and the thing was getting wet.  My average time per mile was 10:11.

This is also my first time hitting 55 miles for a week, which I am very happy about.

First of all, today was the first time in almost a week that I was able to run outside and not get poured on.  We have had an obnoxious amount of rain in this part of the country.  This run was unexpectedly slow.  My stomach felt a bit off when I started, but worked itself out.  I also found myself walking where I normally don't.  I am not happy with the time, which was over 1:30, but am always happy to complete the distance.  My goal was to at least run 8, which I was able to do.  Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day!

I was looking forward to today's run of "only" 12 miles, since my next three long runs are going to be 18, 20 and 16.  Unfortunately, it didn't go as well as I had hoped.  I didn't feel bad, but the pace just wasn't there.  I also found myself checking my GPS way to many times.  I left my iPod at home due to the weather.  It rained during my run, although it wasn't nearly as bad as it was last weekend.  I am used to running without it, but I have to admit that I do like having it for these long runs. I run by myself, so the music keeps me company.  I finished in 2:12:20, which is about 11 minute miles.

It was in the 50's this morning.  I actually had to switch from a short sleeve to a long sleeve shirt.  It was so nice and refreshing.  The only problem that I had, which is common for me, is that since it was cold, my nose was running the whole time.  I thought that with the weather being so nice that my pace would pick up a bit, but it didn't.  I completed this run in 1:33:20.

I ran on the treadmill at the gym today.  It started out well, but didn't end as smoothly as I had hoped.  When I was just shy of hitting the 5 mile mark, I started getting that feeling in my right leg again where it feels as though it is going to give out on me at any time.  When I got to 5, I stopped to use the restroom, which also allowed me to rest my leg (it feels fine while walking).  I got back on for three more miles and struggled once again during the last mile.  I had initially contemplated running 9 today, but thought eight would be a better idea considering.  I warmed up for the 1st mile and then ran the next 3 1/4 miles at a 10 min./ mile pace.  I then took it up to a 9:50 pace, but eventually slowed it back down to a 10 minute mile once I got to the 5 mile point.

Terrible!  This is the best word that I can come up with to describe today outside of using language that I am not suppose to use on the blog.  Things started out alright.  The first 5-6 miles were fine, but after that things started going downhill.  Just prior to mile 7, my stomach told me to find a bathroom ASAP.  (I believe that I ate something a few days ago that has just messed me up.)  Needless to say, I ran to the closest bathroom I could think up, which wound up being back at my house.  By the time I got there and took care of things, I was at mile 7.7.  Unfortunately, running home caused my to skip part of my run.  To make up for it, I ran my mile 1 again, to make up for it.  I felt alright, but found the hills a bit tougher than normal.  Once I got out of there, I was around mile 9, got to my water and had my first CLIF blok.  I felt okay and continued on.  I then got to the next neighborhood that I normally run; I went down the hill fine, but on the way back up, I felt as if I had nothing.  I wound up walking up the hill.  I knew that this was not a good sign for the rest of my run.  I continued on, having to walk a bit and then had my next CLIFblok and water at around mile 12.3.  I could tell that I was slowly fading and wondering if I was going to finish the 20 miles I had scheduled.  The next neighborhood that I hit I am in for a good 3-4 miles.  As I got through, I found myself walking even more to the point that I wound up walking a good part of mile 15 and 16.  By the time I finished in this area, I was at mile 16.3.  I highly contemplated just heading home since I was walking more than running.  My legs were tired, I felt weak and my insides were hurting.  I wound up continuing on for two more miles and essentially walked these.  I attempted to run a couple of times, but my insides just did not appreciate it.  At this time, I had already walked so much that it was difficult to run again.  I decided after mile 17 that I would just head home knowing that by the time I got there it would be a little over 18 miles.  At this point, I have to get creative anyway as far as getting in the extra miles, and I didn't think walking the last two would be beneficial outside of saying that I completed 20 miles today.   I have run my share of 20 milers and marathons to know that I know that I can run 20, unfortunately, today just was not my day.

My weight of 110.5 was post-run.  I am assuming that the stomach problems, led to some dehydration, which is why I felt as lousy as I did.

I was disappointed as this was supposed to be my first 60 mile week.  It just wasn't meant to be.

I hear ya. I had a hard 18 miler today myself. Don't let it define your running. It was a hard day on top of a lot of other miles this week and this month. Sometimes your body is going to have a mind of it's own. Your next attempt will be better!

Thanks.

By the way, nice job on hitting those 10-milers during the week. I am scheduled to start my first full week of work next week and am just hoping to be able to maintain 8 each day during the week.

You really had a rough time today. Some days are like that. But then they must make the good ones seem that much better, right? And 58.5 miles for the week is nothing to sneeze at.

From JD on Sat, Oct 10, 2009 at 19:32:30 from 209.183.51.45

Still good mileage for the week. You also get the benefit of mental conditioning by working through all those tough miles. Nice job!

From Cookielover on Sun, Oct 11, 2009 at 15:41:24 from 97.81.82.211

58.5 miles was my highest ever in a week, so I was happy with that, although my original goal was 60 for the first time. I definitely worked on the mental side yesterday and today. Thanks for positive comments. They mean a lot to me.

Today's run was much better!  The air was a bit cool, so of course, I needed to have some tissues with me.  I was able to run the whole thing including all of the hills that I practically crawled up yesterday.  I needed this run, after the way yesterday went.  I felt strong out there.

Normally, I take Sunday's off, but I am not sure if I will be able to get one in tomorrow due to my work schedule, so I thought that I'd better be safe than sorry.

I ran today at the gym.  I was able to get 7 miles before I had to leave so that I could get home and get ready for work.  I felt pretty good during this workout, although I was very tired.  To run at the gym before work, I have to get up up by 4:00am.  I warmed up for the first mile, ran miles 2-6 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace and then finished mile 7 at a 9:30 minute/ mile pace.  During the last mile, I slowly increased to the 9:30 pace.

Ran at the gym this morning instead of outside this afternoon due to heavy rain.  It went fine once I got going.  I am so tired that I start out a bit sluggish, but then I can get into a groove.  I warmed up for the first mile, and then ran the next 5 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace.  I ran the last mile at a 9:50 pace.  I was hoping for 8 miles, but due to time, I had to stop at 7.

I was back at the gym this morning.  I had to work late today due to parent conferences and working at the football game.  I was able to get 7 miles in again, but am still unable to get that 8th mile in due to time.  The sad part is that I am getting there when the place opens, but I am still not efficient enough to get 8 miles in by no later than 6:25am.  Once again, I warmed up for mile 1 and ran 10 minute miles for miles 2-6.  I ran mile 7 at a 9:50 minute/ mile pace.

I was able to get in another 7 miles this morning.  Once again, I ran at the gym.  I warmed up for the first mile, ran miles 2-6 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace and finished mile 7 at a 9:50 minute/ mile pace.  I felt fine, no aches or pains, but I am exhausted.  This was my first full week back to work.  I am hoping to run at least two of my weekday workouts outside after work (even though I don't really like running after work), so that I can get a bit more sleep in the morning.  This will also allow me to run further since I won't be under a time constraint to get to work.  The only issue I may have is the sun going down, therefore, I have to make sure that I leave work at a decent hour.

I took this run to the streets and felt really good considering that it was in the 40's, raining and I had a cold, which meant I had to stop every 5 minutes to blow my nose.  My body felt good.  I dressed properly including the poncho that I added at the last minute.  That piece of plastic really helped to keep my midsection dry.  I finished in 2:52, which may not be anything to write home about, but I was happy to get through it without feeling completely wiped out.

Sounds like a good run today.

My nose runs a lot too when I exercise. I've learned to blow my nose on the run by blocking one nostril and blowing hard out the other. Just be sure and point your head away from your body!

It is interesting that you brought that up. I was wondering what I was supposed to do. In the past, I would always cut back a bit, especially at the end of the week. My training seems so different this time around that I don't know if I should. What is the rule of thumb? Any thoughts?

I really don't know. I imagine it doesn't hurt to cut back a little before the race. Just depends how you're feeling.

This run went very well.  Per Sasha's advice, I ran two miles at race pace (or at least close to it).  I decided that I would warm up for the first 3 miles since there are a bunch of hills during miles 1 and 2 and because I have to cross traffic during mile 3.  I ran mile 4 at an 8:41 pace and mile 5 at an 8:45(?).  I finished the first 8 miles in 1:15:50 and finished the entire run in 1:17+.  The weather was nice this afternoon.  It cooled off as I was running and I didn't even need to blow my nose, which was a nice change of pace.

PR!!! I broke two hours in the half for the first time ever.  I am so excited!  My previous best had been 2:04:05, which was 5 years ago.  My last half, prior to today was on March 1st, which I believe I ran in 2:06:30.

This was my kind of race.  Mild temperatures which eventually dropped a good 10 degrees and rain.  I know it sounds strange, but for some reason, I have done well in lousy weather.  I had to drive about an hour and twenty minutes for this race.  It was considered a trail run, but this was a paved trail, therefore I was much less likely to twist an ankle.  It started to rain within the first half mile and continued for the majority of the race.  I wore a poncho for the first 9 miles before I finally decided to toss it.   I am glad I did as I wasn't nearly as drenched as some of the others.  My plan, with Sasha's guidance was to maintain an 8:30 minute mile for as long as I could.  I don't have too many of my splits, but I know that I was just under 8:30 for mile 1, 17:30 for mile 2.  I remember clocking an 8:34 at mile 5 and being at 1:00:39 at mile 7, which meant that I was averaging an 8:39 pace .  I realized at this point that even if I slowed down to 10:00 minute miles that I would still PR, so I was really excited and felt good.  We turned around at about 7:35 miles and would run straight towards the finish.   With it being Halloween, sometime prior to the turnaround, I was passed by Batman and Robin.

The only negative thing that occurred was this ongoing issue with my right leg.  At just over 10 miles, I started feeling it turn in, which gives a feeling like it is going to give and I am going to break something.  I really tried to focus on keeping it straight and finishing.  It is hard for me to run as hard once this starts, because that leg just doesn't feel as strong.  I know that after mile 12, I clocked a 9:11 mile per my GPS, which was at about 1:45:00 and my slowest mile.  I know that I could have picked it up a bit more if my leg had felt normal.  My final time on the clock was 1:55:09 (or darn close to that) and my watch had me at 1:54:37.

The number on the scale read 112 when I got home.  This is after the a bit to eat at the race and on my drive home.

Overall, a great morning.  I have been smiling ever since.

I placed 28th out of at least 90 in my age group.

Congratulations on a PR and breaking 2:00 by a lot!

For the marathon you could probably try 9:20 pace and see what happens.

From Cookielover on Tue, Nov 03, 2009 at 21:14:43 from 97.81.82.211

Walter - Thank you so much. I agree with you on the PR's. I smiled all weekend.

Sasha - Thank you. I was not expecting to break 2:00 by that much. I was very excited. Out of curiosity, if I try 9:20 for the marathon and it is too much, do I run the risk of "hitting the wall?" I would love to try and maintain that pace, but don't want to be paying for it later.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Nov 03, 2009 at 22:34:37 from 192.168.1.1

Jennifer - there is always a risk of hitting the wall unless the pace is a complete jog. Good example. James Kwambai in the New York Marathon. A 2:04:27 guy, third fastest time in history in his previous marathon. Races a half in a low 59 a month before the marathon. Everything suggests he is in good shape. He goes out at 5:00 pace sitting in the pack. Should be a piece of cake for a guy like him, but he blows up at 22 and does not even finish.

I've had experiences like that myself, except the pace was 5:50 or 6:00. On the other hand, I've had experiences where I went through the first half only a minute slower than what I could have done all out, and then did slow down some, but it was not a disaster.

Do not be afraid of the wall. Instead, make plans on how you are going to deal with it, because it can come regardless of how fast you start. If it does come you are prepared, and if you were able to start a bit quicker you have a cushion that gives you a reason to keep going. If it does not, be thankful.

From Cookielover on Wed, Nov 04, 2009 at 20:21:14 from 97.81.82.211

Is a safe plan then to go for the 9:20 and if I feel as though I am having trouble maintaining that pace, to add 10 seconds per mile to the pace and try that out? I am all for a plan, I just want to have one that makes sense and is doable.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Nov 04, 2009 at 20:33:18 from 192.168.1.1

Yes. You should be adjusting your pace throughout the race if you start feeling that you cannot maintain it for the rest of the distance or, on the other hand, if it starts feeling too easy. 9:20 was an educated guess that should be somewhat close, but who knows how you are going to feel on the day of the race.

It should feel easier than your half marathon, but not a whole lot easier, and definitely much harder than your normal comfortable pace training runs in the first half. Second half just give it all you've got.

From Cookielover on Fri, Nov 06, 2009 at 20:01:17 from 97.81.82.211

Sasha - Thank you again for the advice. I will definitely attempt the 9:20 pace and will hopefully have a good outcome 6 weeks from Sunday.

This was my first run since the half on Saturday.  It was a beautiful day for a run.  It was even better than usual, because I was able to sleep in first (today was suppose to be a teacher planning day, but we were furloughed instead).  My quads were still a bit sore, although not as much as yesterday.  I didn't plan on running a specific time or distance, I just thought that I would see what I could do without feeling too worn out.  I felt good for the first three to four miles, but started to feel tired as I approached mile 5.  At that time, I thought that it would be in my best interest to just head on home.

I plan on getting my regularly scheduled 8 miles in tomorrow.

I was a little bummed about the distance as I was hoping to get 8 miles in.  I did my best to leave work on time so that I could get my run in before the sun went down.  I was able to get out by 4:15, which was a bit later than I had hoped.  I was able to get home, get dressed and get out the door by 4:50pm.  The weather was good, cooling off as the sun went down.  I felt pretty good overall, the only issue being that I needed to use the potty.  I chose not to stop in the hopes that I the feeling would pass, but between the sun going down and the feeling coming back (I am convinced that my body knows how close it is to a restroom), I decided to head towards home after mile 6 versus continuing on which would have given me the additional mile.  I may have been able to get the last mile in prior to total darkness, which is what disappointed me.  My legs were still a bit tired by the end, which is either from the race, work or a combination of both.  I finished the 7 miles in just over an hour and eleven minutes.

I completed today's run at the gym.  My legs felt tired at the start, probably due to a lack of sleep.  I started at a slower than normal pace to warm up, but eventually got to my standard 10:00 minute mile during mile 2.  I continued the 10:00 minute mile pace through mile 6 and finished mile 7 at a 9:50 pace.

It was cold at the start of this run.  It was in the upper 30's, therefore I was blowing my nose every mile for 3 hours.  I started out a big sluggish, but at about the halfway point, I realized that I would be good to go for the rest of my run and finished feeling good.  It took just over 3 hours, but I did not focus on time.  I just wanted to comfortable get through the mileage.

Weight of 111lbs was post-run.

I ran into the dark tonight.  I got off work as soon as I could and got home so that I could run.  I was hoping for at least 8 miles, which I was able to get in.  Unfortunately, it became dark during my last mile, which I didn't love.  I didn't necessarily feel unsafe, but I really prefer not to run in the dark.  I felt good, and found that I picked up the pace once I could see that the sun was going down faster than I was running.

I ran at the gym this morning.  My legs felt tired, probably because this was my eighth day straight of running.  I will be taking a much needed day off tomorrow.  It took a couple of miles for me to finally feel loose.  I warmed up for the first mile, ran 10:00 minute miles for miles 2-6 and finished mile 7 at a 9:50 pace.  I thought that I may not be able to complete the distance, but I was able to do so, thankfully.

Just a typical morning at the gym.  Warmed up for the first mile and then ran miles 2 - 6 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace.  Finished the last mile at a 9:50 pace.  Considering the lack of sleep from the night before, I felt pretty good throughout.

This was a beautiful morning for a run.  I would say that it was in the upper 40's when I started.  It was sunny the whole time, warming up nicely throughout, although never getting too warm.  I always worry a bit at the start that I may not have a good morning, but today worked out just fine.  My time wasn't anything to write home about, finishing in over 3:15, but I never felt too tired.  I just felt as if I could keep going.  It always feels so good to be able to run that way for that long.

 I was at 112 pounds post-run.

I was in a foul mood at the start of this one.  My husband was kind enough to go with me since he saw how frustrated I was from work. One of the good things about him coming with me is that the pace was definitely faster.  We were going to run about 7 or 8, but cut it short due to a blister on his foot, the sky becoming dark and the fact that I still needed to bake a cake for the next day.  Of course, I felt better when we were done.

These miles maybe listed as "easy", but there was nothing easy about them.  This wasn't a bad run, but I was happy/ relieved when it was over.  It was cold when I started and pretty much stayed that way throughout.  I was out there for a little over 3 hours running my normal route.  This was a rough week work-wise, which is probably why I felt a bit tired.

Funny note ( a bit TMI for some), I ran out of tissues at around the halfway point, therefore I had to resort to the "air hanky" and my sleeve.  I always feel so unlady-like at these moments, but it was my only option while out there.  I am actually feeling a little too comfortable doing it.

I was at 110lbs post-run.

It was so nice to run after having a good nights sleep.  I am off from work this week (part furlough, part holiday), so I went to the gym later than usual.  Eight miles at the gym is not what I would call fun, but I do try and mix running outside and running at the gym for the change of scenery.  It is also cold and rainy, therefore running indoors is probably not such a bad idea.  I warmed up for my first mile, ran the next 4 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace.  Since I was feeling decent, I decided to run the last 3 miles at a 9:50 minute/ mile pace.

I took this one to the streets of Athens and enjoyed it for the most part (this was one of my two typical routes).  Of course, it was chilly in the morning, not too cold, but cold enough that I become one with my Kleenex.  I really didn't concern myself with time as I just want to get through my runs comfortably.  I say that, but what I really mean is that my times haven't been very good and I am hoping that all will be better come race day, which is now 3 1/2 weeks away.

I ran these miles at the gym this morning.  I was a little thrown off at first because Sportscenter was not available upon my arrival, but fortunately, after about a 1/2 mile in, the gym staff was able to get the cable working.  It is funny how accustomed you get to things.  I listened to my Ipod in the interim, but if felt different.  My run itself was fine.  I warmed up for the first mile and ran miles 2-6 at a 10:00 minute/ mile pace.  I finished the last 2 at a 9:50 pace.  I still felt my right leg overpronating more than it should by the last 2-3 miles, but this is becoming more of the norm.

I am also very happy to report that I broke the 60-mile marker for the week for the first time ever!  This is a big achievement for me.

Cold and blah.  That is pretty much what it was like outside.  Fortunately, my run was much better than the weather.  I actually didn't think too much about the running at least for the first few miles.  This run was considered a taper run (compared to 20, yes, but it didn't feel like a taper otherwise), so maybe I was more relaxed.  I just went with the flow and hoped that the rain would hold off, which it did.  I had told myself prior to starting that if I only got 14-15 miles in that I would be fine with that, but needless to say, I felt good enough to get all 16 of my scheduled miles in.

A week before the race and I manage to develop a cold.  This is not the first time that this has happened as I have read that your immune system tends to go down a bit during the taper.  I guess if I had to get this, let it be now and not next weekend.  Needless to say, my run wasn't pretty although I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get through the whole thing.  I did walk on many of the hills, as I felt tired while I was out there.  It was 34 degrees out there, therefore between the cold weather and my cold, the Kleenex were used in full force.

I thought that I was going to get 50 miles in for one more week, but I miscalculated or at least forgot that I only got 6 in on Monday.  No worries though.

Well, this was an interesting morning.  I went to the gym as usual, but unfortunately, the person who opens the place wasn't quite there.  Keep in mind that I get up at 4:10am so that I can be there when it opens at 5:00am.  After waiting for 20 minutes, I decided to go home and run from there.  Once I got home, I had to change into warmer clothing since it was 31 degrees out.  By the time I was able to get out there I had about 50 minutes or so to run, which is about 5 miles of running for me.  It wasn't bad and I felt fairly safe.  It was fairly dark in a few spots.  I would have brought a flashlight, but the smallest one that I could find would have been too heavy to run with.  I really wanted to get my usual 7 miles in, but 5 is better than nothing.  I will try again tomorrow at the gym.  This will be my last run before the marathon.

What a Great Day!  I set a personal best by over 30 minutes!  Prior to this race, my best time was a 4:42:10.  To break 4:15 was awesome, let alone 4:12.  I even had a negative split.  I was so excited!  This is the first time where I have felt pretty good from beginning to end.  It was cold at the start, but not as cold as it has been at home, therefore it was a perfect day for a run.  I dressed perfectly for me and just enjoyed myself as much as I could.  Two friends of mine met me in Jacksonville, one of which also had a PR, so all together we had a great running weekend.

I was a little worried going into this, because I have had a cold and because I was worried that I was getting a fever during my drive down to Florida. I picked up some Tylenol 8 hour, which wound up being a life saver.  At the start of the race, for the first time, my GPS stopped working. I was waiting for a signal and realized that it wasn't moving.  When I went to turn it off, it wouldn't turn off or do anything.  It just stayed locked up.  Fortunately, the race had pacers and I was able to tag along with the 4:15 guy, who I later found out was named Ed.  I wound up running with him from at least 9 - 10 miles and on.  I felt so relaxed.  I knew that the day was going well when I still felt good at 17 and then 18 miles.  At this point, my gut was telling me it was going to be a good day.  At around mile 21 or so, we ran into some friends of the pacer that wound up joining us. One of them named Annie ran with me from about 23 miles to the finish, which was awesome.  It was so nice having someone just to talk to me and remain positive.  I didn't even know her and she saw me pulling away from the group and joined me.  Those last few miles are always a bit of a struggle, so to have someone there was great.  I started feeling that awkward feeling in my right leg around 23 or so, but was able to push through it.

I am now looking forward to a great night's sleep and the next two weeks off from work.  I am going to enjoy some good eats for the next day or so and then get back to normal.

WOW!!!!! That is an amazing improvement. I'm going to have to find some time to go look back at your blogs to see what kind of magical training you've been doing! I have experienced that feel-great-at-mile-18 feeling only a couple of times, and it almost made me teary to read about it in your report. It's the greatest feeling. Congratulations and happy holidays!

TBarlow - Go Dawgs! Where did you live in Georgia? Thanks!

JD, Vinh, Sasha, Jon and Bonnie - Thanks! I was so excited. Thank you for all of your encouragement and advice along the way.

Snoqualmie - The other bloggers advice. They told me to increase my mileage. It took awhile to build up, but it worked. I was running on average 25 miles per week and trained at over 50 per week for a good part of my training.

Josse - Don't tease me like that! 30 more minutes off and we are talking Boston.

Jennifer - your BQ is 3:45:59, right?

Congratulations on a big leap towards your BQ!!!!

I have seen it done many times all you have to do is train and believe:)

From Cookielover on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 19:30:22 from 97.81.82.211

Sasha and Josse - Yes, I am 38, therefore a 3:45:59 is my BQ time.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 19:59:49 from 192.168.1.1

Jennifer - I crunched some numbers with the help of the blog calculator (on the left side when you are adding an entry). Your current marathon/5 K finishing time ratio is 10.32. In order to BQ without increasing your 5 K speed you would need 9.27. This is doable, but very difficult. This would something you will see in a runner who trains at 180 miles a week and is able to absorb it. The 5 K speed needs to be increased to 23:30. Then you would need only 9.62 ratio, which is more manageable and can be achieved off 80 miles a week. With 23:00 things look a whole lot better, as you only need 9.82 ratio, which can be achieved off 60 miles a week.

So the first thing I would do after you recover from this marathon is test your 5 K speed. You might have improved it to 23:30 already or maybe even more. This will tell you to what extent you need to worry about improving your 5 K.

Regardless of the 5 K, you will need to maintain high mileage and do long tempo runs to improve the aerobic base and fuel storage.

From Cookielover on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 20:21:36 from 97.81.82.211

Sasha - Wow! Thanks for doing this. I know that qualifying for Boston is still a long shot, but it is nice to know that it is possible. When do you recommend that I should run my next 5K? Is a couple of weeks too soon or is that really a personal choice as to how one is feeling? I was looking at the local events and there are a bunch of them over the next couple of months. I was just going to walk for the next few days to keep my legs loose and stretched and was planning on going for a short run by the end of the week.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 16:41:20 from 192.168.1.1

Jennifer - I would wait about a month.

From Walter on Mon, Dec 28, 2009 at 18:17:21 from 24.10.169.110

Way to go Jen! It feels so good to PR and to exceed your expectations!

WOW! Great race. Way to smash you previous PR. Heres to hoping 2010 has more PR smashing races for you! Cheers.

From Cookielover on Fri, Jan 01, 2010 at 13:17:02 from 97.81.82.211

Sasha - Thanks. I have already checked the calendar and should be able to race by the end of January.

Walter and Lyman - Thank you so much! I am still on a bit of a high from that race. Hopefully 2010 will be a year for PR's for all of us!

From MichelleL on Tue, Jan 05, 2010 at 09:48:26 from 67.41.235.37

Congratulations on the huge pr. I agree with Sasha to wait a month for the 5k. BQ isn't a long shot, but an attainable goal. Now that you've dropped 30 min and can taste the BQ, just keep that fire alive to fuel the daily grind of consistent training. Congratulations again on your race.

Mileage is approximate.  This was my first run post-marathon.  My husband and I were in North Fort Myers, FL for the holiday.  I ran post holiday meal.  I felt a bit nauseous at first, but the running made me feel better after a mile or two.  It felt good to be out there again, although running on my mother in-law's street did not feel so good.  I had a pain just above my left knee.  It hurt when I ran, but not when I walked.  I decided to attempt to run through the pain and fortunately, the pain went away.  It was warm outside, low 70's, but the ground was nice and flat.  It was nice to get back into the swing of things.  I won't be able to run tomorrow since we are heading back to Georgia first thing and after nine hours in the car, I don't think I am going to want to run.

This was my first run back in Georgia.  It was cold, 25 degrees per the bank sign that I run past.  I had gloves on, but my fingers felt frozen to the point that they hurt for the first mile or so.  Fortunately, during mile 2, my fingers warmed up and felt much better.  My legs felt good.  The hills were not a problem.  I just trued to enjoy my run.  I didn't worry about time.

My weight of 113lbs was post-run.

I decided to take this nice and easy.  It was once again, cold outside.  I also have my parents in town and wanted to get back before any drama started between them and our dogs (one of our dogs is a bit neurotic).  I felt good.  Nose ran as usual.  I didn't weigh myself, because I really did not want to see what it said at this moment in time.

Just another relaxing run outside today.  It has been so nice to sleep in first.  It was cold again.  I felt pretty good, although I wasn't too upset to be done at 5.25 miles.

This was a slow 6 miles, not that I am racing or anything.  It was cold and wet outside, although I avoided the rain for the most part.  I felt like I needed to run, especially after all of the eating out that I did when my parents were in town.  My run felt a bit sluggish, although I know it is not from a lack of sleep, since I have slept in everyday this week.  I guess it is a combination of the prior days of eating out and my legs still recovering from the marathon.  I am not going to worry much about this.  If this is still going on in a couple of weeks, then it will be a bit of a concern.
